Battle of the Sexes: Why It's Dumb
Genders.
Okay, let's stop there and talk for a minute.
Gender is a pretty heated topic in society right now, and I think you know why. Society as a whole is currently having this huge debate as to what the definition of gender is. What makes someone a guy? What makes someone a girl? Can a person be whatever gender they chose to be? For me, personally, this is a topic that I am passionate about. In fact, I'm equally passionate about this topic as I am about families, because this has a direct tie to what makes up a family. Today, I'm going to talk about why gender matters, why male and females are different from each other, and why it matters in terms of the family. I also understand that this is a sensitive topic for some, so I will try to handle this as carefully as I can.
Let's start this conversation off by talking about what makes men and women so different, yet so important in a family setting. There is a document in our church that goes over what we believe makes the best family unit. In the proclamation, it says that both women and men are created in the presence of God, and that both genders have qualities that are eternal, and are designed as such. This is essential to understand because it helps debunk a theory that the world has somehow adopted: the idea that the individual is better off alone. If you are chronically on social media like I am, you know that the idea of love and partnership is out the window. People are constantly coming up with lists of reasons why being single is infinitely better than getting into a relationship. The truth that the proclamation shows us is that women and men need each other, and that we make each other complete. When we choose to isolate ourselves from the opposite gender, we limit the potential that we can have.
Some of you readers might be wondering what differences I'm talking about. There are many differences, but I want to talk about one aspect that I find rather interesting. That is the matter that makes up the brain. In the central nervous system, there are two types of brain tissue: white matter and grey matter. Each one has a very important function. The White matter "allows you to learn and recall information, stay balanced when walking, and respond with appropriate feelings and behaviors to various emotional circumstances in your life, among other functions." Meanwhile, "Gray matter processes information and allows you to control thoughts and memories, feelings and emotions, sensory input, and muscle movement" (Healthline). Both men and women have both white and grey matter in their brain, however men are shown to have more grey matter and women white matter. What that looks like in real life is that men are very good at processing information at the moment getting tasks done efficiently, while women are amazing at making connections to events and situations and seeing things as a whole. This naturally gives men and women advantages in everyday life, but that also means that there are aspects that men and women struggle with. When you combine the two strengths together, suddenly you have so much more coverage than by yourself.
When a man and a woman love each other, and they work hard to strengthen their marriage, something amazing happens. That marriage doesn't consist of two people, it consists of one. The man and the woman combine their strengths to overcome each other's weaknesses, and work together to become one person together. Most people will hear this and think that I'm going insane, but let me just say that my favorite phrase that I've heard people say is that marriage is anything but natural. It is unnatural. My hope is that men and women come together, to aid and build each other up, and great something beautiful in their marriages.
